Faith and the Bible in Mexico
Mexico is one of the most Christian nations on earth. About 78% are Roman Catholic — one of the largest Catholic populations anywhere — and roughly 10% are Protestant or evangelical and growing, especially in the south. All told, nearly 88% of Mexicans are Christian.
Faith is everywhere: in fiestas and processions, in the devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, in the cross over countless doorways. The beloved Reina-Valera (especially the 1960 revision) has carried the Spanish Bible for generations, alongside newer versions like the NVI.
And yet, for all this devotion, many Mexicans have never read the Scriptures for themselves, and God can feel distant — approached through ritual and intermediaries rather than known as a Father. The Reina-Valera — especially the 1960 revision (RVR1960) — is the most widely used Spanish Bible in Mexico and across the Spanish-speaking world. Newer versions like the Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI) are also common. Nearly all Bible reading in Mexico is in Spanish.
