1 In the beginning, our Heavenly Father created the heavens and the earth.

1 初めに、わたしたちの天の父は天と地を創造された。

2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of our Father was hovering over the surface of the waters.

2 地は形なく、むなしく、闇が深淵の面の上にあり、わたしたちの父の霊が水の面の上を覆うように動いておられた。

3 Then our Father said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

3 そこでわたしたちの父は言われた、「光あれ」。すると光があった。

4 He saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

4 父はその光を見て、良しとされ、光と闇とを分けられた。

5 He called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

5 父は光を「昼」と呼び、闇を「夜」と呼ばれた。夕べがあり、朝があった――第一の日である。

6 And our Father said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water."

6 またわたしたちの父は言われた、「水の間に大空があり、水と水とを分けよ」。

7 So he made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so.

7 こうして父は大空を造り、大空の下の水と大空の上の水とを分けられた。そのとおりになった。

8 He called the expanse "sky." So there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

8 父は大空を「天」と呼ばれた。こうして夕べがあり、朝があった――第二の日である。

9 Then our Father said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so.

9 そこでわたしたちの父は言われた、「天の下の水は一つの所に集まり、乾いた地が現れよ」。そのとおりになった。

10 He called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And he saw that it was good.

10 父は乾いた地を「地」と呼び、集まった水を「海」と呼ばれた。父はそれを見て、良しとされた。

11 Then he said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees that bear seed-bearing fruit, each according to its kind." And it was so.

11 また父は言われた、「地は青草を、すなわち種を持つ草と、種を持つ実を結ぶ木とを、おのおのその種類にしたがって生え出させよ」。そのとおりになった。

12 The land produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing seed-bearing fruit according to their kinds. And our Father saw that it was good.

12 地は青草を、すなわちその種類にしたがって種を持つ草と、その種類にしたがって種を持つ実を結ぶ木とを生え出させた。わたしたちの父はそれを見て、良しとされた。

13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

13 夕べがあり、朝があった――第三の日である。

14 And our Father said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark the seasons, the days, and the years,"

14 またわたしたちの父は言われた、「天の大空に光るものがあって昼と夜とを分け、季節と日と年とを示すしるしとなれ。

15 "and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so.

15 また天の大空にあって光を放ち、地を照らすものとなれ」。そのとおりになった。

16 Our Father made two great lights: the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

16 わたしたちの父は二つの大きな光るものを造られた。大きい光るものに昼を治めさせ、小さい光るものに夜を治めさせられた。父はまた星々をも造られた。

17 He set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth,

17 父はこれらを天の大空に置いて地を照らさせ、

18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And he saw that it was good.

18 昼と夜とを治めさせ、光と闇とを分けさせられた。父はそれを見て、良しとされた。

19 So there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

19 こうして夕べがあり、朝があった――第四の日である。

20 Then our Father said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."

20 そこでわたしたちの父は言われた、「水は生き物の群れで満ち、鳥は地の上、天の大空を飛べ」。

21 So he created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves and teems in the water, each according to its kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And he saw that it was good.

21 こうして父は大きな海の生き物と、水に群れて動くすべての生き物とを、おのおのその種類にしたがって創造し、また翼ある鳥をことごとくその種類にしたがって創造された。父はそれを見て、良しとされた。

22 Our Father blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth."

22 わたしたちの父はこれらを祝福して言われた、「生めよ、増えよ、海の水に満ちよ。また鳥は地に増えよ」。

23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

23 夕べがあり、朝があった――第五の日である。

24 And our Father said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so.

24 またわたしたちの父は言われた、「地はその種類にしたがって生き物を、すなわち家畜と、地を這うものと、野の獣とを、おのおのその種類にしたがって生み出せ」。そのとおりになった。

25 He made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And he saw that it was good.

25 父は野の獣をその種類にしたがって造り、家畜をその種類にしたがって造り、地を這うすべてのものをその種類にしたがって造られた。父はそれを見て、良しとされた。

26 Then our Father said, "Let us make humanity in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over every creature that moves along the ground."

26 そこでわたしたちの父は言われた、「われわれのかたちに、われわれの似姿に、人を造ろう。そして彼らに、海の魚と空の鳥、家畜と地のすべてのもの、地を這うすべてのものを治めさせよう」。

27 So our Father created humanity in their own image; in the image of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit he created them; male and female he created them.

27 こうしてわたしたちの父は、ご自身のかたちに人を創造された。すなわち父と子と聖霊のかたちに彼らを創造し、男と女とに彼らを創造された。

28 Our Father blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

28 わたしたちの父は彼らを祝福し、彼らに言われた、「生めよ、増えよ、地に満ちて、これを従わせよ。海の魚と空の鳥、地に動くすべての生き物を治めよ」。

29 Then he said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that bears seed-bearing fruit. They will be yours for food.

29 また父は言われた、「見よ、わたしは全地の面にある、種を持つすべての草と、種を持つ実を結ぶすべての木とをあなたがたに与える。これがあなたがたの食物となる。

30 "And to all the animals of the earth, all the birds in the sky, and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

30 また地のすべての獣、空のすべての鳥、地を這うすべてのもの――命の息を持つすべてのものには――わたしはすべての緑の草を食物として与える」。そのとおりになった。

31 Our Father saw all that he had made, and it was very good. So there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

31 わたしたちの父はご自分が造られたすべてのものを見られた。見よ、それははなはだ良かった。こうして夕べがあり、朝があった――第六の日である。

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

1 さて、パリサイ人の一人で、ニコデモという名の人がいた。彼はユダヤ人の指導者であった。

2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from our Father, for no one can do these signs that you do unless our Father is with him."

2 この人が夜、イエスのもとに来て言った、「ラビ、わたしたちは、あなたがわたしたちの父のもとから来られた教師であることを知っています。わたしたちの父が共におられなければ、あなたが行っておられるこれらのしるしを、だれも行うことはできないからです」。

3 Jesus replied to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of our Father."

3 イエスは彼に答えて言われた、「まことに、まことに、あなたに言います。人は新しく生まれなければ、わたしたちの父の御国を見ることはできません」。

4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"

4 ニコデモは彼に言った、「人は年老いてから、どうして生まれることができるでしょうか。もう一度母の胎に入って生まれることなど、できるでしょうか」。

5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of our Father."

5 イエスは答えられた、「まことに、まことに、あなたに言います。人は水と聖霊とによって生まれなければ、わたしたちの父の御国に入ることはできません。

6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Holy Spirit is spirit.

6 肉から生まれたものは肉であり、聖霊から生まれたものは霊です。

7 Don't be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'

7 あなたがたは新しく生まれなければならない、とわたしが言ったことを、驚いてはなりません。

8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Holy Spirit.

8 風は思いのままに吹き、あなたはその音を聞くが、それがどこから来てどこへ行くのかを知りません。聖霊から生まれた者は皆、そのとおりです」。

9 Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?"

9 ニコデモは彼に言った、「どうして、そのようなことがありえましょうか」。

10 Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?"

10 イエスは彼に答えて言われた、「あなたはイスラエルの教師でありながら、これらのことが分からないのですか。

11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.

11 まことに、まことに、あなたに言います。わたしたちは知っていることを語り、見たことを証ししています。それなのに、あなたがたはわたしたちの証しを受け入れません。

12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

12 わたしが地上のことを話しても、あなたがたは信じません。まして天上のことを話したなら、どうして信じるでしょうか。

13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

13 天から下って来た者、すなわち人の子のほかには、だれも天に上った者はいません。

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

14 モーセが荒れ野で蛇を上げたように、人の子もまた上げられなければなりません。

15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

15 それは、彼を信じる者がみな永遠の命を得るためです。

16 For our Father so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

16 わたしたちの父は、世をこれほどまでに愛してくださり、ひとり子をお与えになった。それは御子を信じる者が一人として滅びることなく、永遠の命を得るためである。

17 For our Father did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through him.

17 わたしたちの父が御子を世に遣わされたのは、世を裁くためではなく、御子によって世が救われるためである。

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of our Father.

18 御子を信じる者は裁かれない。しかし信じない者は、わたしたちの父のひとり子の名を信じなかったので、すでに裁かれている。

19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

19 その裁きとは、こうである。光が世に来たのに、人々は自分の行いが悪かったので、光よりも闇を愛した。

20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, for fear that his works will be exposed.

20 悪を行う者は皆、光を憎み、自分の行いが明るみに出されることを恐れて、光のもとに来ない。

21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in our Father.

21 しかし、真理を行う者は光のもとに来る。その行いが、わたしたちの父にあって成されたことが、はっきりと示されるためである。

22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and there he remained with them and was baptizing.

22 この後、イエスは弟子たちとユダヤの地方へ行き、そこで彼らと共に滞在して、バプテスマを授けておられた。

23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized,

23 ヨハネもまた、サリムに近いアイノンでバプテスマを授けていた。そこには水が豊かにあったからである。人々は次々に来て、バプテスマを受けていた。

24 for John had not yet been put in prison.

24 ヨハネはまだ獄に入れられていなかったのである。

25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification.

25 さて、ヨハネの弟子たちの何人かと一人のユダヤ人との間に、清めのことで論争が起こった。

26 And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him."

26 彼らはヨハネのもとに来て言った、「ラビ、ヨルダンの向こうであなたと共におられた方、あなたが証しされたあの方が――ご覧ください、バプテスマを授けておられ、皆がその方のもとへ行っています」。

27 John replied, "A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven."

27 ヨハネは答えて言った、「人は、天から与えられるのでなければ、何一つ受けることはできません。

28 You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.'

28 わたしが『わたしはキリストではなく、その方より先に遣わされた者である』と言ったことは、あなたがた自身が証しできます。

29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom — Jesus. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete.

29 花嫁を迎える者は花婿である――それはイエスです。花婿の友人は、そばに立ってその声を聞き、花婿の声に大いに喜びます。ですから、わたしのこの喜びは今や満たされています。

30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

30 あの方は栄え、わたしは衰えなければなりません」。

31 The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. The one who comes from heaven is above all.

31 上から来られる方は、すべてのものの上におられる。地から出る者は地に属し、地上のことを語る。天から来られる方は、すべてのものの上におられる。

32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.

32 その方は、見たことと聞いたことを証しされるが、だれもその証しを受け入れない。

33 Whoever receives his testimony confirms that our Father is true.

33 その証しを受け入れる者は、わたしたちの父が真実であることを確認したのである。

34 For the one whom our Father has sent speaks the words of our Father, for he gives the Holy Spirit without measure.

34 わたしたちの父が遣わされた方は、わたしたちの父の言葉を語られる。父は聖霊を限りなくお与えになるからである。

35 Our Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.

35 わたしたちの父は御子を愛され、すべてのものを御子の手にお与えになった。

36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of our Father remains on him.

36 御子を信じる者は永遠の命を持つ。御子に従わない者は命を見ることがなく、わたしたちの父の怒りがその上にとどまる。
